MAKO Joint Replacement procedures are robotic – arm assisted, surgeon controlled joint resurfacing procedure designed to relieve the pain caused by joint degeneration due to osteoarthritis (OA). It is performed using the proven robotic technology of the Mako System. It enables surgeons to accurately resurface only the diseased portion of the knee or hip, saving as much of the original anatomy as possible including healthy bone and ligaments.

This minimally invasive approach, combined with a patient-specific surgical plan and more accurate implant placement, results in a more natural feeling knee compared with total knee replacement.

Stefan D. Tarlow, M.D.

Dr. Tarlow is one of Arizona’s original Mako Robotic Knee Surgeons, with his first partial robot knee surgery performed in January of 2011. He has performed nearly 900 Mako Robotic Partial Knee Replacements Surgeries including several hundred Mako Robotic Total Knee replacements. Dr. Tarlow is a leader in Robotic Knee Surgery in both Arizona and the US. Dr. Tarlow is a pioneer and remains one of Arizona’s leaders in same day/outpatient Mako Robotic Partial Knee Replacement and Mako Robotic Total Knee Replacement. Advanced strategies for pain management and evolving technologies with surgical protocols allow most patients to skip the hospital and go home directly from the recovery room. He is a consultant for Stryker Robotic Knee Surgery for which he performs training labs, surgical mentoring and surgical observations for his Orthopedic colleagues from US and abroad. Dr. Cohen

Russell G. Cohen, M.D.

Dr. Cohen has incorporated techniques that have protected the soft tissue around the hip and joint that are commonly incised or cut during surgical exposure. He has helped develop specialized instruments with a team of surgeons and engineers to innovate the Direct Superior Hip Replacement procedure. This muscle sparing-approach has been taught to hundreds of surgeons in both the US and abroad with excellent clinical outcomes. He has also mastered the technique of sparing the quadricep muscles during exposure in knee replacement surgery, providing the benefit of early independent walking and immediate quadricep control following surgery. What makes Dr. Cohen unique in his approach, is the incorporation of these muscle sparing techniques with Robotic technology. This rapidly developing technology has proved to enhance the accuracy of implant placement, customization of the procedures, allowing the surgeon to know more about the patient’s anatomy and ultimately cutting less.
